The next step is to get the child writing
independently, i.e. NOT going over dots or grey letters. Some children will
not need guide-lines for this, whilst most will. This is where the fonts with
‘ruled’ lines come into their own. And this is how I do it (obviously you
will use your font of choice); _____________________________________ I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens
me. Phillipians 4 v13 \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ _____________________________________ The greyed out lines are a couple of sizes bigger
than the font itself. They seem to need to be. The child then aims to
complete the writing taking up only the same space at that which they are
copying. Remember to only really use this ‘copy under’ with
your more advanced writers because it requires a great deal of concentration
and fluency, otherwise it will be full of eraser marks and will become
painfully laborious for the child! Our aim is not to make the child detest
handwriting, but to encourage them to take great pleasure and pride in
producing beautiful, legible penmanship, and for this to over-spill into all
their work, such that it becomes the most natural thing in the world to them.
