Following a conversation on one of my homeschooling
Yahoo groups I felt it might be useful to other home-educators if I share
with you how I tackle ‘handwriting’ with my brood. My name is Caroline and I have seven children,
ranging from almost 11, down to almost 1, so that covers just about every
stage or ‘writing’ you can imagine - bar adult! I have been home-educating
for the whole part - now some 5 1/2 years and the way I have taught
handwriting hasn’t really changed, because I found that the path I took
worked (can’t say that for everything mind)! So this is what we do; When the children first start
out writing we use
Getty
& Dubay handwriting books & Jolly Phonics (they are not
dissimilar). This gets them off to a good start with correct letter
formation. Then as they begin to develop we move on to home-made handwriting
sheets, whereby they write OVER either greyed out letters or dotted letters
(depending on the font chosen). As they get older allow them a limited choice
as to what font they would like to use and develop. On this site I will show
you examples of the ones we use (this is MontessoriScript ), the ones I
consider will lead to a legible hand, but that we don’t currently use and
links to where you can find others! I will also show you in some examples
them in use. |
